The Comics Reporter: Comics By Request - People & Projects In Need Of Funding:

Tom Spurgeon talked about the Epiphany fundraiser on The Comics Reporter! Check out the third asterisk down.

“Make or break” is a pretty good way to put the state of affairs right now with the fundraiser, as we’re 11 days out from the deadline and we still haven’t hit the halfway point yet (currently we’re at $2,198). Have no fear, I’m gonna keep promoting the whole thing where and when I can, but I’ve got to emphasize how important it is that you guys keep doing the same.

In the event that we don’t hit the goal, though… earlier tonight I requested quotes for smaller print runs (150 and 200) of the full CMYK books, as well as a run of black and white books. Ideally, thanks to Indiegogo’s Flexible Funds option, I’ll still be able to fulfill all the orders of everyone who’s donated so far; it’s just that I won’t have as many to sell at conventions, to stores, and on my website after the release date. It does feel crummy to start drawing up failure contingency plans, but after everything is over, I want to make sure I’m not cheating you guys out of what you ordered.

Okay, so HERE’S the big announcement I was talking about: We’re HALFWAY through our Epiphany Print Fundraiser, and we’ve already raised $2,133 as of the time of this writing. That’s more than we raised for last year’s fundraiser in half the time, SO HEY, WE ARE DOING AWESOME! However, we’ve still got $2,867 left to raise in the next thirteen days, so I’m going to be ESCALATING to STRONGER MEASURES in this last crucial almost-fortnight. MEASURES THAT INCLUDE:

A banner ad on FurAffinity, to appeal to the furry crowd! (If you use FA, keep an eye out for it. It’s the really maroon one.)
Project Wonderful ads, to appeal to the webcomics crowd! (Who, I’m hoping, don’t have Adblock turned on. Ahehehhhhh.)

I first began reading Epiphany late 2009.

At the time I was a deviantArt-obsessed art tournament freak. One of the biggest ones was finishing up, and I was always trawling the comments of the sporadic ‘main timeline’ comics posted by the tourney creator for new work to look at. My favorite character during that particular competition was ‘Chimbley Sweep’- a sassy-mouthed ten year old constantly tracking dust and grime everywhere, he won the hearts of many.

He’d been eliminated from the game some rounds before, but the creator of Chimbley Sweep still sometimes posted comments on the entries, at that time under the name of ‘ConcentrationMoon’. He seemed pretty clever, engaging, and an all around cool dude.

“If you really like the comic work I did for the tournament,” I remember him posting one day, “check out this other, larger webcomic project I’m working on!” He was publishing it under his real name, Ian Jay.

I wanted to remind you of the digital comics I’ve got up over on Gumroad at those awesome pay-what-you-want prices (oh man that includes FREE too!)

And also my good good buddy Ian Jay is holding a fundraiser to get his Epiphany story in print, too! He did this neat two-page guest comic for Lancaster while that was still going, so this seemed like a neat way to plug our respective projects at the same time!

HOLY SMOKES, AN IAN JAY GUEST COMIC FROM THE DUSTY BONE CRYPT OF YEARS PAST

Okay, time for some real talk: when I was a young, easily excitable teenager doing a jumbled mess of a space-opera comic, I was in this webcomics collective called “SpiderSpawn”. Out of all the other artists in that collective— none of whom I knew personally at the time— my favorite was Lancaster The Ghost Detective, a comic about an odd-haired little dude who ran around and annoyed dead people for a living. It was funny, well-paced, it had a really wide-ranged and imaginative cast of characters, and the style was crisp, fun, and incredibly readable (which was more than I could say for my own comic). It was like a lost Saturday morning cartoon classic, except it ALSO revealed some deeper, more mature themes running beneath it over the course of its run.

I followed Lancaster up until its dramatic conclusion, and I did a bunch of weird dopey half-sardonic guest art like these two pages for Phil, which at the time was my way of saying I really liked his work. Epiphany wasn’t inspired by any one series, but I’d pinpoint Lancaster as the catalyst for me deciding that my next series would fall broadly under “supernatural animal people”. I kind of owe him one!

Anyways, you can get the whole gigantic honking series on Gumroad now for as much as you want, so you don’t really have an excuse not to read it. PAY PHIL SOME MONEY FOR THIS SERIES, THOUGH. You won’t be sorry (and it will look a hell of a lot better than this guest comic does, trust me).

one of the things i really love about epiphany is how it takes religious and spiritual concepts like struggling against the unknown and trying to find a higher purpose and twists it to fit a strong emotional narrative. it’s a journey about coming to terms with faith or the loss thereof, but rather than being a direct story about a single real person, it’s allegorical without being pretentious or pandering. that’s real tough to do.

ian jay is a cool guy who wrote a really good comic here, and whether it’s funny or serious it’s always a delight to read. you should consider donating to his campaign for sure, but if you haven’t read epiphany yet you HAVE to.

In response to me asking for feedback on Epiphany a couple days ago, JAMES “dragonmaw” DRAGONMURFTH did this really awesome write-up on it. As we enter the second half of the fundraiser, I thought I’d share it with you guys!

I just got caught up on Epiphany and dang it’s awesome! I love its unique story, and also how it plays with several story conventions, especially those concerning gods and animal-people tropes you see in a lot in other comics. The art is wonderfully stylized and aesthetically appealing, and I think the ancient-looking color palette would look great on a book.

DAY TWO OF THE FUNDRAISER PUSH (about to be day three) and the total is at $1,247 right now. We’re doing great, but we can’t rest on our laurels! Every day that passes is a day closer to the fundraiser’s due date, so we’ve got to make them all count.

HEY GUYS! Quick fundraiser update: we’re at $931 at the time of this posting— a PRET-ty good number considering we’re not even at the 24-hour mark yet. I’m really psyched at how many people have sprung for the higher tiers so far, but I am also thankful for the people who donated just a few dollars. I also need to thank all of you who have been reblogging/retweeting/remixing/whatever my video and news post. You could’ve spent your money and/or efforts on ANYONE on the internet, but you chose me, so I have to give you all MAD RESPECT.

AND HEY, SPEAKING OF SPENDING EFFORTS: youtuber and Let’s Play-er Crazy Jay Here made a video about Epiphany! If you don’t know what the heck my comic is about, and you need someone with a smooth, charismatic voice to give you the low down on it, LOOK NO FURTHER.
